There is something different about encountering God beneath a sky filled with stars.
Far from the lights and distractions of everyday life, Camp Hidden Rock offers a place to slow down, look upward, and consider the incredible beauty of God’s creation.
Under the Stars is a signature experience of Worship in the Woods, a ministry of Steelecroft Church at Camp Hidden Rock in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.
It brings together faith, fellowship, Scripture, astronomy, education, prayer, and wonder—creating opportunities to explore the night sky while reflecting on the Creator who spoke it into existence.

LOOK UP. WONDER. WORSHIP.
For thousands of years, people have looked into the night sky and wondered at what they saw.
The Bible tells us to do more than simply look.
It invites us to consider.
To remember.
To worship.
To recognize that the heavens are not the Creator—but they testify to Him.
At Camp Hidden Rock, the night sky becomes part of the classroom, the sanctuary, and the conversation.
We may gather around a campfire, spread out beneath the stars, study Scripture, learn about the constellations, identify planets, or simply sit quietly and take in the vastness of creation.
And in those moments, we are reminded:
We are part of something far greater than ourselves.
THE HEAVENS DECLARE
A Bible Study Beneath the Stars
At the heart of Under the Stars is The Heavens Declare, a Bible study experience exploring what Scripture teaches us about the heavens, creation, God’s character, and our place within His creation.
Through Scripture and observation, participants are invited to explore questions such as:
- Why does the Bible speak so often about the heavens?
- What can creation teach us about the Creator?
- Why did God tell Abraham to look at the stars?
- What does Psalm 19 mean when it says the heavens declare God’s glory?
- What does the Bible say about the stars being numbered and named?
- What can we learn when we simply stop and consider the heavens?
- What does it mean to follow the Star?
- How should Christians understand astronomy in light of Scripture?
This is not simply a lesson about stars.
It is an invitation to see creation through the lens of faith.
SCRIPTURE UNDER THE STARS
Throughout the Bible, the heavens are used to point us toward God.
“In the beginning…”
Genesis 1 begins with the creation of the heavens and the earth and reminds us that the universe exists because God created it.
“Look now toward heaven…”
In Genesis 15:5, God tells Abraham to look toward the heavens and count the stars as He speaks of His promise.
“The heavens declare…”
Psalm 19:1 reminds us that creation itself bears witness to the glory of God.
“When I consider thy heavens…”
Psalm 8:3–4 moves from the vastness of creation to a profound question about humanity’s place within it.
“Lift up your eyes on high…”
Isaiah 40:26 calls us to look upward and recognize the One who created and sustains the heavenly host.
“He telleth the number of the stars…”
Psalm 147:4 reminds us that the God who created the heavens knows every star.
“Following the Star”
The story of Matthew 2 brings us to the Star associated with the birth of Christ and reminds us that the greatest light is not found in the heavens—but in Christ Himself.
FAITH & ASTRONOMY
Studying Creation. Worshiping the Creator.
Under the Stars makes room for both faith and learning.
Participants may have opportunities to learn about:
- Stars and constellations
- Planets and the solar system
- The moon and lunar cycles
- Meteor showers and celestial events
- Seasonal night skies
- How to identify prominent stars and constellations
- The science of light and the night sky
- The history and significance of astronomical observation
But our purpose is not simply to understand what is above us.
Our purpose is to consider what it tells us about the One who made it.
We study astronomy, the observation and study of God’s creation.
We do not practice astrology or seek to determine our future through the stars.
The stars do not control our future. God does.
A NIGHT AT CAMP HIDDEN ROCK
Under the Stars gatherings may look different depending on the season, weather, and purpose of the gathering.
A typical evening might include:
Gathering & Fellowship
Come together, share a meal or refreshments, and settle in around the fire.
Scripture & Bible Study
Explore a biblical passage connected to creation, the heavens, light, God’s promises, or Christ.
Astronomy & Exploration
Learn about the night sky and discover what may be visible above Camp Hidden Rock.
Stargazing
Step away from artificial light and spend time observing the stars, planets, moon, and constellations.
Prayer & Reflection
Take time to be still, reflect, pray, and consider the greatness of God.
Worship
Respond to what we have seen and learned through worship and thanksgiving.
Sometimes the most meaningful part of the evening may simply be sitting quietly beneath the sky.
NIGHT UNDER THE STARS
An Evening of Faith, Fellowship & Wonder
One of our signature gatherings is Night Under the Stars—an evening designed to bring people together for fellowship, learning, Scripture, and worship beneath the night sky.
Depending on the season and conditions, an evening may include:
- Campfire fellowship
- Bible study
- Scripture readings
- Astronomy presentation
- Guided stargazing
- Constellation identification
- Telescope or binocular viewing
- Children’s and family activities
- Prayer and reflection
- Worship
- Refreshments
- Special seasonal programming
The schedule may change.
The purpose does not.

The night sky changes throughout the year—and so does our experience of it.
SPRING
A Season of Renewal
Spring brings longer evenings, returning life, and a reminder of God’s work of renewal.
Spring gatherings may focus on creation, new beginnings, hope, and spiritual renewal.
SUMMER
Night Under the Stars
Summer offers some of the best opportunities to spend extended evenings outdoors.
Gather around the fire. Open the Word. Look toward the heavens. Stay awhile.
FALL
The Harvest Sky
As the leaves change and the nights grow longer, fall provides a beautiful setting for reflection, thanksgiving, fellowship, and worship.
WINTER
Following the Star
Winter brings some of the clearest and most dramatic night skies of the year.
During the Christmas season, our attention turns toward the story of Christ’s birth and the Star that became part of the journey of the Magi.
The seasons change. God’s faithfulness does not.
A PLACE FOR FAMILIES
Under the Stars is designed to create opportunities for people of different ages to experience God’s creation together.
Children can learn to recognize stars and constellations.
Families can explore the night sky together.
Adults can step away from the noise and demands of everyday life.
Believers can gather for Scripture, prayer, and fellowship.
And everyone can simply take a moment to look upward.
Sometimes faith begins with a question.
How many stars are there?
How far away is that planet?
Why does the moon look different tonight?
Who made all of this?
Those questions can become opportunities to learn—and opportunities to talk about God.
WHEN THE SKY BECOMES THE SANCTUARY
At Camp Hidden Rock, we don’t need stained glass windows to see beauty.
We don’t need a ceiling to gather together.
We don’t need four walls to worship.
Sometimes the sanctuary is a clearing in the woods.
Sometimes it is a campfire.
Sometimes it is a trail.
And sometimes it is the vast night sky above us.
Under the Stars is an expression of our belief that God’s creation can draw our attention toward the Creator.
“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained…” — Psalm 8:3
WE DON’T WORSHIP THE STARS.
WE WORSHIP THE ONE WHO CREATED THEM.
The stars are not gods.
They are not guides to our destiny.
They are not objects of worship.
They are part of God’s creation.
And when we look at them, we are reminded of the incredible power, order, creativity, and majesty of the One who made them.
The heavens declare.
We listen.
We learn.
We wonder.
And then we worship.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Every Under the Stars gathering may be different, but you can expect an atmosphere centered around:
Faith
Scripture, biblical teaching, prayer, and worship.
Fellowship
Time together around the campfire, table, trail, or gathering space.
Learning
Opportunities to explore astronomy, nature, and the world God created.
Wonder
Time to slow down, look upward, and appreciate the beauty around us.
Reflection
Space for quietness, prayer, gratitude, and spiritual renewal.
Community
A welcoming environment where families, friends, and fellow believers can gather together.
WHAT TO BRING
For outdoor evening gatherings, we recommend bringing:
- Comfortable outdoor clothing
- A jacket or layers for changing temperatures
- Comfortable shoes
- A flashlight or headlamp
- A camp chair or blanket
- Water
- Bug spray during warmer months
- A Bible
- Binoculars or a telescope, if you have them
- A willingness to slow down and look up
And perhaps most importantly:
Come curious.
