WORSHIP IN THE WOODS

Where Faith Meets Creation

A Ministry of Steelecroft Church at Camp Hidden Rock

There are places where we gather because we have to.

And then there are places where we gather because something about the setting invites us to slow down, listen, reflect, and draw closer to God.

Worship in the Woods was established as a ministry of Steelecroft Church to create those kinds of opportunities.

Held at Camp Hidden Rock, nestled in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, Worship in the Woods brings people together throughout the year for worship, Bible study, fellowship, prayer, learning, service, and spiritual renewal.

Here, the walls are replaced by trees.

The ceiling becomes the sky.

The classroom becomes the woods.

And the gathering place may be a campfire, a trail, a picnic table, or a clearing beneath the stars.

We believe ministry can happen anywhere people gather together in faith.

WHY WORSHIP IN THE WOODS?

Modern life rarely gives us much opportunity to be still.

There is always another notification, another responsibility, another demand for our attention.

Sometimes we need to step away from all of it.

To open God’s Word.

To sit quietly.

To pray.

To listen.

To fellowship.

To look around at the beauty of creation and remember the One who created it.

Worship in the Woods provides a setting for those moments.

It is not about escaping the world permanently.

It is about stepping away long enough to return to it renewed, encouraged, equipped, and strengthened in faith.

“Be still, and know that I am God…”
— Psalm 46:10

MORE THAN AN EVENT

Worship in the Woods is not a single annual gathering.

It is a year-round ministry series that provides opportunities for people to gather at Camp Hidden Rock throughout the seasons.

Some gatherings may be large.

Others may be small.

Some may be structured around a particular Bible study or seminar.

Others may simply be an evening of fellowship around a fire.

Each gathering has its own purpose, but all share a common foundation:

Faith. Fellowship. Worship. Creation.

WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WOODS?

📖 BIBLE STUDY & DISCIPLESHIP

God’s Word is at the center of everything we do.

Worship in the Woods provides opportunities for individuals and groups to gather for Bible study, discipleship, discussion, and spiritual growth.

Studies may explore individual books of the Bible, biblical themes, Christian living, faith, leadership, family, service, and the challenges of living out our faith in today’s world.

Open the Word. Ask questions. Learn together. Grow in faith.

✨ UNDER THE STARS

The Heavens Declare

One of our signature Worship in the Woods experiences invites participants to step outside beneath the Appalachian night sky.

Under the Stars combines Bible study, stargazing, Scripture, education, prayer, and reflection.

Together, we explore the wonder of God’s creation and the biblical truths that remind us that the heavens declare His glory.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
— Psalm 19:1

Look up. Wonder. Worship.

🔥 CAMPFIRE FELLOWSHIP

Some of the best conversations happen when people simply have time to sit together.

Campfire Fellowship creates an informal setting for conversation, testimony, prayer, worship, Scripture, and shared meals.

There may be no formal agenda.

There may be no podium.

There may simply be people gathered around a fire, sharing life and encouraging one another.

Gather. Share. Listen. Encourage.

🙏 PRAYER & REFLECTION

Not every gathering needs to be filled with activity.

Sometimes the most meaningful ministry happens in stillness.

Worship in the Woods provides opportunities for quiet prayer, personal reflection, devotional time, and spiritual renewal.

The woods offer space to slow down and intentionally seek God away from the distractions of everyday life.

Sometimes we need to stop talking long enough to listen.

🌲 SEMINARS & WORKSHOPS

Faith should shape not only what we believe, but how we live.

Worship in the Woods may include seminars and workshops designed to equip individuals and families with practical knowledge while connecting that learning to Christian principles of stewardship, service, preparedness, and responsibility.

Topics may include:

  • Christian preparedness
  • Family preparedness
  • Wilderness awareness
  • Emergency preparedness
  • First aid and emergency readiness
  • Leadership and service
  • Ministry and community outreach
  • Stewardship
  • Outdoor education

Our goal is not simply to provide information.

Our goal is to equip people to use what they learn to serve others.

🌿 RETREATS & SPECIAL GATHERINGS

Camp Hidden Rock provides an environment suited to smaller, more intentional gatherings.

Worship in the Woods may include:

  • Prayer retreats
  • Men’s gatherings
  • Women’s gatherings
  • Family retreats
  • Small-group gatherings
  • Leadership retreats
  • Ministry planning gatherings
  • Seasonal fellowship events
  • Special teaching and worship gatherings

These experiences provide time to step away from ordinary routines and focus on faith, relationships, and spiritual renewal.

🍂 WORSHIP THROUGH THE SEASONS

One of the special things about gathering outdoors is experiencing the changing seasons.

The landscape changes.

The sounds change.

The weather changes.

And each season provides a different opportunity to reflect upon God’s creation.

SPRING

Renewal & New Beginnings

Gatherings focused on renewal, growth, creation, and the newness of life.

SUMMER

Under the Stars

Long summer evenings provide an ideal setting for outdoor worship, Bible study, fellowship, and stargazing.

FALL

Harvest & Thanksgiving

A season for gratitude, fellowship, reflection, and giving thanks for God’s provision.

WINTER

Following the Star

Special Advent and Christmas gatherings focused on the birth of Christ, Scripture, worship, and fellowship.

FAITH IN ACTION

Worship is more than what happens when we sing.

Faith is more than what happens when we study.

We believe faith should move us toward service.

Worship in the Woods may therefore include opportunities to put faith into action through service projects, property stewardship, ministry preparation, community outreach, and other activities that support the work of Steelecroft Church.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works…”
— Ephesians 2:10

Gather to worship. Learn to serve. Go to make a difference.

A PLACE FOR FAMILIES

Worship in the Woods is intended to provide opportunities for people of different ages and backgrounds to gather together.

Families can spend time together.

Children can experience the wonder of God’s creation.

Adults can find fellowship and encouragement.

Older generations can share wisdom and stories.

And everyone can find opportunities to learn, worship, and serve.

Faith is something we live together.

THE CREATION AROUND US

We do not worship the woods.

We worship the Creator.

The natural setting of Camp Hidden Rock simply provides a remarkable reminder of God’s handiwork.

The mountains.

The trees.

The changing seasons.

The wildlife.

The streams.

The stars.

All point us toward something greater than ourselves.

“When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained…”
— Psalm 8:3

Worship in the Woods gives us an opportunity to experience that sense of wonder while keeping our focus where it belongs:

On God.
